Kidney transplantation requires accurate anatomical orientation and precise technical execution. This
simulator provides a safe and realistic environment in which trainees and clinicians can practise the
implantation phase without any risk to patients, improving procedural confidence and familiarity with the
surgical workflow. Notably, the phantom has been successfully tested in a real operating room
environment, demonstrating its direct value for clinical education (link to the publication).
• Realistic Anatomy: Replicates the recipient surgical field and includes a separate donor kidney model for implantation.
• Anastomosis Training: Allows hands-on practice of the key procedural steps, from initial anatomical orientation to vascular and urinary anastomoses.
• Reusable Design: Features replaceable components, enabling repeated procedures and extending the simulator’s lifespan.
• Customizable Anatomy: Recipient and donor anatomies can be customized on request using patient CT data.
• Fluid-Circulation Ready: The simulator is equipped with dedicated connectors for integration with a mock circulation loop, enabling the simulation of fluid flow and pulsatility.
The 3D4MED Kidney Transplant Simulator is delivered as a complete training platform designed to provide realistic, repeatable, and cost-effective practice for kidney transplantation procedures. Its modular architecture combines durable anatomical structures with replaceable procedural components, maximizing both realism and long-term usability.
What is included
• Fixed Anatomical Base: A permanent, rigid platform reproducing the pelvic region, including an external frame mimicking the skin, the retroperitoneal space, and the major pelvic vessels, such as the iliac artery and vein. The base provides a stable foundation for the replaceable components and reproduces a patient in the supine position, supporting a realistic surgical approach.
• Replaceable Recipient Anatomy Module: Includes the main vascular and urinary structures required for anastomosis, such as segments of the iliac vessels and the bladder. The module is designed for frequent replacement, allowing multiple suturing sessions.
• Donor Kidney Component: A separate, realistic donor kidney model featuring renal artery, renal vein, and ureter structures, designed to be positioned and surgically implanted into the recipient phantom.
• Silicone Soft-Tissue Pads: Dedicated replaceable pads that mimic superficial soft tissues, allowing trainees to practise realistic incision, tissue handling, and retractor positioning.
How to Use
All components are designed for intuitive assembly and rapid replacement. The modular design allows users to quickly prepare the simulator for successive training sessions, making it suitable for both individual practice and high-volume educational courses focused on advanced surgical transplantation. The kit is accompanied by detailed instructions available in both printed and video formats.
Looking for a customized version?
The simulator can be customized by replacing the donor and recipient components. You can provide us with either the patient-specific model of interest or the patient’s CT imaging data. Customizations can be requested at info@3d4med.eu.
